Christmas comes early

Just in time for the holidays, the Stamps have released the football schedule for the 2018 season!

With the schedule coming out a full two months earlier than it has in recent history, fans have the chance to plan their summers or maybe even buy season tickets as a gift for that football fanatic on their Christmas list.

“I’m glad the schedule is out so much earlier,” says head coach Dave Dickenson. “As a football staff, it gives us focus and allows us to start making preparations accordingly. It really makes a big difference.

“I’m also happy for the fans. I’m sure that from their standpoint, the earlier the better. They get to see what our schedule looks like and can start planning their summers.”

Speaking of summer, five regular-season home games are in the months of June, July and August before the annual Labour Day Classic against Edmonton on Sept. 3. Additionally, McMahon is the place to be on Saturdays, as six of Calgary’s home games take place on Saturdays. No kickoff at McMahon this season will be later than 7 p.m.

A major difference fans will notice in this year’s schedule is that the season will start a week earlier. The 18 regular-season games will be played over 21 weeks instead of 20, with each team getting three byes. Calgary’s byes are in Weeks 4, 9 and 15. This was done to reduce the number of short turnarounds teams have between games which promotes player safety and quality of play.

The Stamps will face an East Division opponent five straight games to start the season but 10 of their final 13 games are against the West. It’s sure to be an exciting stretch to end the season, as Calgary faces a West rival in the final four games, when playoff implications are on the line.

“I know the league has made a concerted effort to have more division games at the end of the season after we didn’t have any games against the West in the final month a couple of seasons ago,” says Dickenson. “So I’m not surprised the 2018 schedule looks the way it does.

“Overall, my philosophy is that the schedule is the schedule and I don’t worry too much about it. We have to play all the games no matter how they line up.”

So happy holidays Stamps fans! We hope you join us for another exciting season of Stampeder football in 2018!
