Mayo Calls it a Career

A leader.

A great teammate.

And a champion.

Those are just three of the many ways to describe what Deron Mayo was during his time with the Stampeders.

Mayo re-signed with Calgary at the beginning of free agency this off-season after an injury kept him out of the line-up for most of the 2017 season.

However, the veteran defender has decided to retire.

Through his six-year career (2012-2017) in the Red and White, Mayo played 87 regular-season contests, where he recorded 277 defensive tackles, 33 special teams tackles, 14 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

Mayo was signed by Calgary as a free agent prior to the 2012 season and he would go on to make his CFL debut on July 1 of that season, but not getting his first start until the Western Final that fall.

No doubt his biggest accomplishment came in 2014 when he won a Grey Cup after the Stamps beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

In 2015, he started every game for the Stamps at his middle linebacker position and led the team with 72 tackles – earning the team’s nomination for Defensive Player of the Year.

Entering the 2016 season, his peers recognized the talent and leadership the Mayo brought to the locker-room by voting him as one of the team’s captains for the season.

Mayo was a consistent force on the field that year and a calming veteran presence in the room and on the sideline. Because of that, his teammates once again acknowledged his efforts by voting him as the Presidents’ Ring winner for demonstrating excellence on and off the field.

While he may be hanging up his cleats, he’ll forever be a Stampeder.

Thank you, Deron.
