Changes in the Trenches

The Stamps offensive line has seen plenty of turnover this off-season.

But one constant is Spencer Wilson – the team’s Swiss Army knife.

Coming into his eighth season with the Red and White, the 6-foot-7 veteran can’t wait to slip on the cleats again.

“Heading into training camp [on May 20th] I feel good,” said Wilson. “I’ve had a good off-season training with the team. I feel ready to battle it out in two-a-days for the next three weeks. Camp is a grind, but that’s where you learn the plays.”

Calgary’s changes to the offensive line began when former Grey Cup champion Dan Federkeil announced his retired on Feb. 8. The group lost another member when Cam Thorn became a free agent. Since then, Pierre Lavertu and Roman Grozman – two players who have dealt with consistent injury issues – both announced their retirements.

Among the departures there was one notable – and familiar – addition.

The Stampeders inked Derek Dennis in February, not long after he had been released from the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Dennis was a member of the Stamps in 2016, winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award.

“Derek is a familiar face,” Wilson said. “Solid, solid o-lineman and he’s a great guy in and out of the locker-room; a good guy to joke around with.”

With all the changes, the Stamps were light on Canadian content across the offensive line, having just Wilson, Brad Erdos, Shane Bergman, Quinn Smith, and Dillon Guy on the roster.

So it was no surprise that president and general manager John Hufnagel drafted three offensive linemen in the CFL draft, including selecting the University of Calgary’s Ryan Sceviour in the first round.

Calgary added David Brown in the fourth round, but he’ll miss the entire 2018 season as he recovers from an injury sustained during Western’s Vanier Cup victory. A round later, the Stamps picked up Justin Lawrence from Alberta.

“We needed Canadian depth at o-line, without being too blunt,” explained Wilson. “I think (Huff and his team) did a great job with the two guys they brought in. They look good and strong and I’m sure they’re chomping at the bit, ready to go.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting the new guys and I’m excited by the two U of C draft picks. I think that’s awesome to draft guys with vested interest in Calgary. I’m looking forward to gelling with the new guys as an o-line, that’s a very important thing.

“I’m just happy to be back in it, this is what you train all off-season for. I’m ready to get back to playing football, the sport I love.”
