Hitting the Ground Running

He’s off to a solid start.

Wide receiver Reggie Begelton opened up his second campaign with the Stamps last weekend, tallying two receptions for 60 yards in the club’s season-opening 28-14 victory over the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

For the Texas native, it’s an honour to be back with the Red & White and after playing in nine games last season, he’s looking to make a bigger impact this time around.

“It’s a blessing to have the opportunity to be back. I love this team, I love this atmosphere, and I love this city,” said Begelton.

“I’m just happy that I made the cut, and that I could come out here and have another year of professional football under my belt.”

Begelton hit the ground running last Saturday, when he caught a 38-yard reception from Bo Levi Mitchell on the first play of the Red & White’s opening drive.

“Bo came up to me before the game so we could go through plays that we like,” Begelton explained.

“For one, we knew we could probably get some corner routes on them, and we opened up with that exact route – I saw the ball in the air, and well it has to come down, so I just (grabbed it).”

In order to maximize his role, the 24-year-old is focused on staying healthy after being cut for a month due to injury last season (released June 17, resigned July 18.).

“I want to stay injury free, to be a contributor to the team, that’s my ultimate goal,” he said. “If the team can depend on me to be there, then I’m satisfied.”

While there’s plenty of stiff competition between the pass-catchers this go ‘round, Begelton said the camaraderie among them is strong.

“We have a very talented group,” he said of the Stamps’ receivers. “We could go anywhere in this league and give anybody a run for their money for the starting spot – every one of our receivers”

“But we’re not selfish, we have a close knit group, we help each other out, we all depend on each other.”

Next up for Begelton and his teammates is a Grey Cup rematch this Saturday in Toronto against the Argonauts.

“I’m expecting Toronto to come out and try to punch us in the mouth, but they’re going to know that we can punch, too,” said Begelton.

“We’re expecting to go in there and show everybody that we have last year in the past, and that we’re coming in and thinking about this year.”
