Catching Fire

He’s definitely hit the ground running.

Through the first three games of the 2018 season, Stampeders receiver DaVaris Daniels has already looked in mid-season form.

“I think I’m locked in,” said Daniels, whose team is on a bye week. “I’ve been ready every night to go out there and make plays, and show what I can do.”

“Dave (Dickenson) has been putting together great game plans and we’ve been executing. I’m just doing my part in helping move the chains and contribute as much as I can.”

With 187 receiving yards on 11 receptions to go along with a major, the 25-year-old has been Mr. Reliable,  highlighted by his two big back-to-back performances headed into the bye week.

In Week 2 against the Toronto Argonauts, Daniels had four catches for 76 yards and found the endzone to help the Red & White to hammer the defending Grey Cup Champs 41-7 in enemy territory.

In his next outing, Daniels had five catches for 91 yards in the Stamps 24-14 victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks last Thursday at McMahon.

“It feels great to have this kind of start and it helps that we have a lot of playmakers on this receiving corps with the ball being spread around,” he said. “You never know who is going to go for a big day, it could be me, Eric (Rogers), KJ (Kamar Jorden), Juwan (Brescacin) Reggie (Begelton).

“It makes the game easier for everyone, the defence can’t just focus on one guy. If you run man-to-man against us, I think we’re one of the top receiving corps in the league and you have to pick your poison with us.”

The trio of Daniels, Rogers and Jorden alone have combined for 507 receiving yards, more than half of the team’s total passing yardage – they sit third in the league with 907. To top it off, all six of Bo Levi Mitchell’s touchdown strikes have been to the three.

“We go out there and wait for our chances, wait for the plays to come to us and not force anything,” Daniels said. “We know what we are capable of and know that our time is coming, no matter what. We could be down 20 and still have faith. You never give up on this team.”

Given the club’s 3-0 start, a bye week so early in the campaign isn’t ideal but Daniels said they will make the most of it.

“The way that things are set it up with our coaching staff and trainers, everyone is going to be ready coming back from it,” he said. “We look at it as a time to get better, step away from football a little bit but still stay focused.”
