The second annual Guts N Glory Flag Football tournament on Sept. 16 is more than just a great time.

It’s an opportunity for people to help out a great cause.

Stamps punter and event founder Rob Maver is heavily invested in making a difference in the lives of those with Crohn’s and Colitis.

“A few years ago, when I met my wife, I was introduced to that part of it. She has Crohn’s,” explained Maver. “It’s one of those things that when you become aware of it, you realize how prevalent it is and how many people have it. When I told people I was a player ambassador for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, a lot of people would come up to me and say, ‘Hey, this is how I’m affected.’

“It’s a disease – a bunch of diseases, actually – that people don’t really talk about. When you start to talk about it, you realize what the reach is. It’s very predominant in Alberta and Canada. It’s not a disease unique to Canada, but a high concentration of Canadians suffer from in and within that, Albertans have the highest rate within Canada.

“This is a disease that affects Albertans.”

With the idea of finding a way to raise money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, Maver created the fundraiser, which is held at McMahon Stadium.

The tournament – which boasts referees, food, drinks, live music, an emcee, and a guaranteed three games – is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

“So if people are looking for a way to have fun, this can be a great team building activity with your co-workers or something fun to do with your friends,” Maver said. “If you want to get out and run around and give back to charity, one that directly improves the lives of people in Alberta, this is a great event to do that.”

Last year, they had a great turn out and received rave reviews from all of the participants who got to play some football, mingle with Stampeders players, and help make a difference.

And while it was a great start, Maver and his team are trying to make this year even better.

“We raised a little bit over $20,000 and we’re hoping to get a little bit higher,” he said. “We’re hoping for between $30,000 and $35,000 for this amazing cause this year. In order to do that, we need as many people to come out and play as possible.”
