A Great First Step

It was his first CFL game, but you wouldn’t realize it.

Receiver Markeith Ambles made his regular-season debut in Friday’s playoff spot clinching 38-16 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium.

And there was no sign of first-game jitters, as Ambles led the Red & White’s receivers with 3 catches for 69 yards (38 YAC).

“There’s no pressure, it’s easy to play with all the receivers and Bo,” Ambles said.

“It felt good, it was a pretty good start but I expect more out of myself though, so I’m looking forward to next week’s game.”

To make things even more interesting for the 26-year-old, he took on his old club in his first regular-season appearance.

Prior to this campaign, Ambles had signed with the Toronto Argonauts in May 2016, and was released from the team’s practice roster that August.

“I was really excited to go against them,” he said. “It was actually a great feeling to go against a team that released me in my first game.”

Now, with his first taste of victory with the Stamps, Ambles is eager to get back to work – especially with the possibility of having his name called once again as injuries continue to riddle the Red & White receiving corps.

It may have been a solid start, but there are still a few things to iron out before Thanksgiving, when the Red & White travel to Montreal to take on the Alouettes.

“We have a lot of things to work on red zone wise,” Ambles explained.

“I’m expecting for us to go in as a team and for all the receivers to improve on the things that we didn’t do well this game, we need to get better for next game.”

And even though the Stamps have already clinched a playoff berth there’s no slowing down – they’re still battling to win the west, for the bye, and of course for the Grey Cup.

“It feels good to have already made playoffs because it’s one goal that we checked off the list,” Ambles said. “But the ultimate goal is the Grey Cup so that’s what we’re all striving for.

“I’m ready for my next opportunity.”
