A Tailgate Wedding

A win and a wedding.

That’s what Sheldon Wicks and Corry McLean got back on Sept. 28, when they exchanged vows prior to the Stamps 38-16 victory over the visiting Toronto Argonauts.

The couple tied the knot outside of McMahon Stadium in front of friends, family – and hordes of other fans.

“We knew we didn’t want a big wedding,” explained McLean. “We were thinking about going to the courthouse and doing it, but then I thought that it was a little special so we should do something we like better. I mentioned to Sheldon that we should do it at a tailgate party.”

“It’s our favourite place to be, at the Stamps games,” said Wicks. “A lot of our favourite people are there already, so it made sense. It’s our little Stampeders family.”

“We had the wedding in the parking lot close to the pedestrian overpass. There was a little spot with some grass and a nice big area to set up the gazebo to have the ceremony under. Tons of people were asking if they could take pictures with their own phones, as well. We even had a pair of Outriders come and ask to take pictures with us when they found out what was going on.”

And now, they’ve got a great one-liner to share with people when asked about their wedding.

“I joked with some guys at work who asked how many people I had at my wedding and I said 24,000,” laughed Wicks.

When they moved to Calgary in 2013, Wicks and McLean almost immediately became part of the Stampeders family.

They were grateful to spend their wedding day with all of the amazing people whom they’ve shared many memories with in Section O.

“We’ve been together for about sixteen years and we’ve only lived in Calgary for just over five years now,” Wicks said. “We’ve been season-ticket holders for four of those years.”

“We moved from Vernon, B.C., which was a small town with nothing to do, so as soon as we moved here, we knew we were going to go to football games,” McLean explained.

“It didn’t take very long, especially with the section we have, to fall in love with the place,” Wicks remarked. “During the third quarter, our section serenaded us with Sweet Caroline. Almost the whole section was standing and singing for us.”

Having been engaged since 2005, this union was a long time coming.

That being said, the entire plan for the tailgate wedding didn’t come together until August of this year.

“To tell you the truth, it had only been planned for a month and a half,” said McLean. “It was quick.”

But their big day included all of their favourite people, a big win by the home team, and a post-game light show to cap it off.

It was just right for this pair of Stamps fans.

“It was fantastic,” they both agreed. “The fireworks were for us, right?”
