It’s one of the most anticipated games of the year – the Labour Day Classic. Every season, on the September long weekend, the Stampeders host the Eskimos at McMahon for an epic Battle of Alberta tilt. Last season, the homeside won their seventh straight Classic. Whether this is your first time or your 10th time, there are some major guidelines for every fan that can help you enjoy this big game like a pro.

Look Up!

The Labour Day Classic also honours the Canadian Armed Forces and members of the military. Throughout the game, there will be events celebrating their service and the most well-known is the highly anticipated flyover of two CF-18 jets to mark the beginning of the tilt. When you hear the not-so-subtle whirl of the jet engines, look up!

Join the Red and White

Be sure to show your support by helping us fill the stadium with Stamps colours for this annual game. If you don’t have any Stamps gear, anything that’s red and white will do! There is also the Stamps Store at the Stadium where you can get some Stamps gear to really show the love. You can pick up anything from t-shirts to toques at the Stamps Store, making sure you’re prepared for any weather!

Getting To The Game

The Labour Day game is one of the busiest tilts of the season. For this reason, we recommend alternative transportation to get you to the stadium in a timely manner. Extra points if you’re planning on having a few drinks! Uber’s and taxis are options, however, with the train station just a short walk from the stadium, the C-Train is the ideal option – especially when avoiding traffic jams before and after the game.

Tailgating The Right Way

All sports fans know that the best way to start off any game is with some good ol’ tailgating. For the Labour Day Classic, step up your game at the Gridiron Gardens! They have a bunch of activities for the whole family and best of all, it’s FREE for EVERYONE. You don’t need a game day ticket to attend! Make sure you head to the South practice field before the game to enjoy the full pre-game experience. Tailgate will run 12:30- 2:30 p.m. We suggest going at least an hour before the game to get some player autographs, enjoy music, food, and drinks. Sorry adults, the bouncy castle is only for kids, but maybe you can sneak in an airbrush tattoo.

Come Hungry

If you’re tailgating at the Gridiron Gardens, you’ll have the chance to pick up food from vendors on site. However, make sure you save some room for when you get into the stadium. McMahon’s food is not your typical stadium fare. The chefs have been working hard and they’ve scored some major touchdowns in our books. Grab a fan favourite such as the Smoked Beef Brisket, Pocket Dawg, or the Jalapeno Popper Footlong for pre-game, and once halftime rolls around it’s the perfect time for dessert. The new go-to is the Pillow Donuts. Some would argue they are just as satisfying as a WIN but we’ll let you decide. We suggest sharing, but we won’t blame you if you keep these to yourself. To help get food in your hands quicker, bring cash! Lines at the ATMs can be long, and you don’t want to miss one second of the game.

Embrace The Cowbell

Stamps fans are known for their passion. This is evident on Labour Day as we spread our love to the Canadian Armed Forces. If this is your first time going to a Stamps game, be prepared for the inevitable and unavoidable ringing of cowbells. It’s a tradition and part of the Stampeders spirit. It’s not something that’s going to stop so why not bring your own and help cheer on your team. We promise it feels really good to ring the heck out of one.

Have Fun!

These tips are meant to add to your Labour Day Classic experience, but our most important tip is to have fun. Come prepared to support our Canadian troops and cheer on the Stampeders as we go for another win.
