Provincial foes will renew their historic rivalry on Monday in the annual Labour Day Classic between the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos. Kickoff from McMahon Stadium is at 2:30 p.m.

The Stamps, sitting at 5-4, are coming off a bye week. Edmonton lost on home field for the first time in 2019 with a 34-28 defeat to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 11.

An eighth consecutive Labour Day victory against the 6-4 Esks would award Calgary the season series over the Green and Gold and also move Calgary ahead of Edmonton in the West Division standings. In addition, Monday could mark the 100th time the Stamps have prevailed over Edmonton in franchise history.

Back on Aug. 3, the Stampeders defence denied Edmonton the end zone on the game’s final play to hold on for a 24-18 win. Eric Rogers caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Nick Arbuckle and Terry Williams scored the first kickoff-return touchdown of his career.

Last year’s Labour Day matchup also ended in dramatic fashion as Rene Paredes split the uprights from 43 yards out as time expired for a 23-20 triumph.

The Labour Day battle between the Stampeders and Eskimos was first played in Calgary in 1959 and the Stamps and Esks have met a total of 53 times in early September. The Red and White lead the all-time series 27-25-1.
This year’s Labour Day rematch – the third and final all-Alberta encounter of the regular-season – will take place next Saturday, Sept. 7 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Gridiron Gardens

As part of the Stamps’ recognition of the Canadian Armed Forces on Monday, a military vehicle as well as emergency response vehicles will be on display at the south practice field.

The Gridiron Gardens will also feature face painters, yard games, player autographs, a photo booth, a Stamps BBQ tent, a live DJ and partner activations beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The Norris Trophy, won by Flames captain Mark Giordano as the National Hockey League’s top defenceman for the 2018-19 season, will be available for photos as well.

Red City Drum Line

The team’s drum line will be performing both before and during the game.

There will be an in-game recognition of the Calgary Flames captain and reigning Norris Trophy winner.

Halftime

Following the second quarter, the Great Canadian Cooper Tire Race will take place on the field. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will compete to win a new set of tires.

Honouring our Armed Forces

The Royal Canadian Air Force will conduct two CF-18 Hornet flypasts prior to kickoff and a Canadian Armed Forces band will be performing our national anthem. Members of the military will also be saluted throughout the game including a presentation of four Stampeders season tickets to a pair of Canadian Armed Forces families courtesy of ATB. Fans are encouraged to show their support for our military by visiting the Stamps Store and concourse kiosks on game day to purchase a limited-edition Stampeders adjustable camo cap for $30 or a Stampeders military hat for $20. Proceeds from the sales of each hat will be directed towards Support Our Troops.
