It was a must-win game and that’s just what the Stampeders did.

With a 21-16 victory over the BC Lions on the road, Calgary has secured second place in the West and will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next weekend in the Western Semi-Final at McMahon Stadium.

The defence was nearly unbeatable in the first half, allowing only 58 yards through the air and a single field goal – which was aided by a long defensive pass interference call.

Bo Levi Mitchell – 283 yards and a touchdown – had the offence moving well in the first half, but could not solve the puzzle to get into the endzone. Calgary would settle for four field goals.

The Red and White also added a pair of points on a safety after they pinned the Lions deep in their own zone.

In the second half, the defences would concede some more offence, beginning with a Daniel O’Brien Lions touchdown run from the 1-yard line.

The Stampeders would answer back, with rookie Hergy Mayala (103 yards) catching a touchdown in the corner of the endzone.

BC would score once more late, with Brian Burnham finding paydirt on a throw from Brandon Bridge.

With time winding down, the Lions looked to make one last drive down the field and take a shot at victory, but a scrambling Bridge saw his final throw of the game be intercepted by new Stampeders linebacker Dexter McCoil.

After that, all that was left for the Red and White was to set up the victory formation.

Calgary is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 10 at McMahon Stadium for a Western Semi-Final match-up against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
