The 2021 edition of the Battle of Alberta begins when the Calgary Stampeders take on the Edmonton Elks at McMahon Stadium for Monday’s 55th Labour Day Classic.

Calgary’s first-ever regular-season game, a 9-0 triumph, came on Labour Day in 1946 against the Regina Roughriders. The Red and White began playing Edmonton on the initial Monday in September back in 1959 and have reconvened 53 times since. The Stampeders hold a 28-25-1 advantage.

Both teams started the 2021 season 0-2 and have one win – in Week 3 – on the season thus far. The Stampeders last entered Labour Day with a single victory in 1985. Edmonton was 1-8 in 2013 when the Green and Gold took to the field on the end-of-summer holiday.

In the 2019 game, the Stamps scored a pair of touchdowns on offence, Cory Greenwood and Derek Wiggan registered one sack apiece and Royce Metchie made his first career interception en route to a successful 25-9 outing.

On Sunday, Calgary was defeated 18-16 in Winnipeg. The Elks have been off since Aug. 19 when they came out on top 21-16 in BC thanks to a Mike Jones TD and four field goals from Sean Whyte.

So far this year, the Stampeders have moved the chains a CFL-high 80 times compared to the Elks’ league-low 40 first downs. Calgary has recorded the most rushing attempts and the most passing attempts through Week 4 while Edmonton is the only team yet to force a turnover or score a touchdown along the ground.

The season series between these two provincial rivals will be on the line next Saturday when the Stamps venture north for the rematch at Commonwealth Stadium.
