Classic Streak Ends At 8

The Labour Day winning streak has come to an end.

It wasn’t the outcome the Stampeders were looking for at Monday’s Labour Day Classic as they fell 32-20 to the visiting Edmonton Elks in front of 31,039 fans at McMahon Stadium.

The loss sets the Stampeders record back to 1-4 on the season, while the Elks improve to 2-2.

In the second frame the Elks widened the gap, as Harris and Jalen Tolliver would connect in the endzone for another six with. The extra point was good, making it 14-3 for the visiting team.

On the following drive, what was supposed to be a turnover on downs for the Stamps turned into a fresh set in the red zone following an Elks roughing the passer penalty. The next play, Ka’deem Carey would run the ball 13 yards for a touchdown. Paredes nailed the convert to round out scoring in the half.

The Stamps came up big during their first possession of the third frame. An eight play, 87-yard drive was completed with an endzone connection between Maier and Markeith Ambles to mark the home team’s second touchdown of the game. Paredes’ convert was good to put the Stamps up 17-14.

Not long after, the Elks tied things up at 17 apiece following 36-yard field goal from Whyte.

Just 35 seconds into the fourth, Paredes provided his second field goal of the game, kicking 17 yards to put the Stamps back on top.

The Elks followed up with an 11 play, 75-yard drive finished off with James Wilder Jr. running the ball in for the score. Whyte completed the convert to make it 24-20 for the visitors.

The Elks struck once again shortly after as Mike Jones ran the ball in 20 yards following a 52-yard reception for the major. The extra point was good to make it 31-20. The Stamps conceded a single on the following play – creating a deficit they couldn’t overcome.

The Battle of Alberta will once again be on the line next Saturday when the Stamps venture north for a rematch with the Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.
