A fierce West Division rivalry will be renewed when Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stampeders (2-5) tackle Cody Fajardo and the Roughriders (5-2) in a Saturday showdown.

Saskatchewan is the only West opponent Calgary had not yet faced this season and this week’s game kicks off a stretch of three matchups in 21 days against the Riders.

With a Week 8 bye, the Red and White were last in action for a 23-17 defeat in Hamilton on Sept. 17. Receiver Luther Hakunavanhu’s first CFL reception went for 74 yards and defensive lineman Shawn Lemon added two more sacks for a team-high total of six.

The Roughriders’ most recent outing was a dramatic 31-24 come-from-behind victory over BC in Vancouver. Saskatchewan recovered a pair of Lions fumbles and Jamal Morrow recorded a combined 196 yards returning kickoffs, punts and a missed field goal.

Heading into Week 9, the Stampeders have allowed opponents the lowest average return on both kickoffs and punts and are the only team to not allow a big-play in the return game. Also, the offence sits No. 1 in completions and first downs through the air.

The Riders counter with a CFL-best 155 rushing attempts, but are the most penalized team in terms of both infractions and yards.

Ka’Deem Carey of Calgary has 150 career rushing attempts – 75 this season and 75 from back in 2019. The University of Arizona alum has already doubled his touchdown total from last season despite playing in one less game.

In addition to their two additional duels with the Roughriders, the Stampeders will make road trips to BC and Ottawa in October leading into their second pause in the schedule.
