Stamps Beat The Riders on Family Day!

A rivalry reignited.

In their first meeting of the 2021 CFL campaign the Stamps came out on top over the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday night, defeating them 23-17 in front of 25,516 fans at McMahon Stadium.

With the victory the Stampeders improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Riders drop to 5-4.

Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 16 passes for 184 yards. While Shawn Bane led Red & White receivers in his CFL debut, with two receptions for 56 yards and one touchdown.

On the other side of the field Cody Fajardo completed 25 passes for 269 yards, while William Powell made his presence felt, with 11 carries and five receptions for a total 172 yards.

It was the Stamps who got the first score of the evening as Mitchell connected with Bane for his first CFL reception before pitching the ball to Malik Henry, who would grab the ball and dive into the pylon for the major for his first CFL touchdown. Rene Paredes nailed the convert.

The momentum didn’t stop there, as minutes later Bane would cap off a seven play drive with a 24-yard touchdown – the first of his CFL career. The extra point was good.

The Stamps would hold the Roughriders scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, making it 14-0 after one.

A Brett Lauther field goal would get the Riders on the board on their first drive of the second frame.

Paredes answered back with a field goal of his own, hitting from 40 yards out.

Lauther struck once again with just over a minute remaining in the second, this time from 27 yards, to round out scoring in the first half.

It wasn’t until 8:24 into the third that the Stamps scored once again, as Paredes booted his second field goal of the night from 40 yards out to make it 20-6 for the home team.

The Riders recorded a single on their following drive to make it 20-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

It was Powell who got the Riders first and only touchdown of the night, as he capped off a four play, 97 yard drive with an endzone rush at just eight minutes remaining in the tilt

Three drives later Paredes widened the gap, kicking a 43-yard field goal to make it 23-14 for the Red & White.

Lauther responded with a Riders field goal from 28-yards, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Stamps came up victorious at 23-17.

The Stamps look to keep their momentum rolling next Saturday as they head to Saskatchewan for a rematch with the Riders Saturday Oct. 9 at 5p.m. M.T.
