Paredes Nails Winner; Stamps Take Season Series Over Riders

Another game, another thriller.

It was a neck-in-neck clash between the Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic stadium Saturday night, but the Stamps would take the season series after a last second Rene Paredes field goal secured a 22-19 Stamps victory.

With the win, the Stamps improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Roughriders drop 5-4 on the 2021 CFL campaign.

Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 28 passes for 296 yards and Ka’Deem Carey led the way on offence, with 109 yards rushing and 69 receiving on the evening. On defence, Jameer Thurman and Darnell Sankey made their presence felt with five tackles each, while Mike Rose recorded two sacks.

Riders QB Cody Fajardo went 20-for-31 and 191 yards, while Kyran Moore led the receivers in green with six receptions for 73 yards.

It was fireworks early for the visitors from the Stampede City as Mitchell and Markeith Ambles connected for a 71-yard touchdown just 13 seconds into the tilt. The convert was good.

The Riders responded with a 45-yard Brett Lauther field goal on the next drive.

With 1:55 remaining in the first frame Paredes kicked a field goal of his own, a 19-yard boot to cap off a lengthy 11-play Stamps drive.

The Riders got the first score of the second quarter, a 14-yard touchdown courtesy of Ricardo Louis to tie the game. Lauther hit the convert.

A 12-yard field goal from Paredes with one minute remaining in the second put the Stamps up by three, but the lead didn’t last long. A 52-yard field goal from Lauther on the final play of the frame would tie it up heading into the second half.

4:50 into the third Paredes would put the Red & White ahead, kicking a 27-yard field goal right through the middle to make it 16-13.

On the following drive it looked like the Riders would get their first lead of the evening, but what appeared to be a Brayden Lenius touchdown was called off as an incomplete pass after review. Saskatchewan settled for a field goal to even the score once again.

Early in the final quarter Lauther hit his fourth field goal of the night from 40 yards to put the Riders up by three. Paredes would also get his fourth of the game nine minutes later, a 43-yard field goal to level the playing field yet again at 19 apiece.

The game would come down to a nail-biter of a final drive, but Paredes was money – nailing a 44-yard field goal with no time remaining in the tilt to secure the Red & White win.

Next up the Stamps will venture west to take on the Lions at BC Place Oct. 16. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m.
