Stamps Punch Playoff Ticket For 16th Straight Year

Win: check.

Season series: check.

Playoffs: check.

The Stampeders have punched their ticket to the post-season for the 16th-consecutive season following a 33-23 victory over the Lions at BC Place Friday night.

With the win the Stamps improve to 7-6 on the 2021 campaign, while the Lions’ playoff hopes have been dashed as they drop to 4-9 and out of the post-season race.

Returning Stamps receiver Reggie Begelton appeared to have never missed a beat, with seven receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown in his 2021 debut. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell went 20-of-26 for 264 yards and three touchdowns.

The Lions got on the board first as Nick Vogel capped off a seven play, 53 yard drive with a 13 yard field goal.

Begelton wasted no time in making his presence felt in the game. On the Red & White’s first offensive play of the night he recorded his 150th CFL catch for a lengthy 38 yards. The grab set the Stamps up well for a six play march down the field, completed with an endzone connection between Mitchell and Markeith Ambles for a touchdown.

The Lions answered back on the following series with another boot from Vogel, a 39 yard field goal to round out scoring in the first frame.

The next points didn’t come until 8:57 remaining in the second, as Lions QB Nathan Rourke ran a touchdown in for the homeside to wrap up a nine play, 51 yard drive.

It wasn’t long after the Stamps got their second major of the night, courtesy of a 15 yard endzone catch by Begelton on the following series. The convert kick would go wide left.

Rene Paredes kicked his first field goal of the game from 35 yards as time expired in the half to put the visitors back in the lead after 30 minutes.

The Stamps came out hot in the second half, as a huge 46 yard effort from Kamar Jorden would put them in the redzone just 1:20 in. Ka’Deem Carey would finish the job with a six yard run for his 7th touchdown of the season.

The Lions’ next possession didn’t last long, as Shawn Lemon would force a Mike Reilly fumble after just two plays. Isaac Adayemi-Berglund got the recovery. The Red & White took the opportunity to get three more points on the board as Paredes hit from 44 yards.

Vogel then kicked his third field goal of the night for the Lions, a 37-yarder to cap off a six play series.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Lions got their first touchdown of the night, a 16-yard major from Jevon Cottoy with 11:03 left in the tilt to make it a three point game.

The Stamps weren’t giving up easily though, as a nine yard Malik Henry touchdown padded their lead with 4:27 remaining – enough to secure a Red & White victory.

Next up the Stamps host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for Legacy night at McMahon Stadium Nov. 20. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. M.T.
