Stamps Walk It Off!

Talk about a momentum swing.

Down by nine with just 2:05 remaining in the tilt, a Luther Hakunavanhu touchdown and Rene Paredes field goal would turn the tables on the game, and the Stamps now head into the CFL post-season with a 13-12 win at McMahon Stadium Saturday night.

The Red & White finish the regular season at 7-7, while the Bombers finish atop the CFL at 11-3

Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell went 7-of-11 for 39 yards in the first half, while Maier – at the helm for the second – went 10-of-20 for 177 yards and one touchdown.

On the defensive end, Darnell Sankey finishes the regular season leading the CFL in defensive tackles with 97 after recording eight on the evening.

It was a scoreless first quarter, but there was plenty of action nonetheless.

The most impressive of it was a scoring Bombers scoring chance foiled by a Jameer Thurman strip-sack. With the visitors set at the two-yard line going for the major, Thurman took quarterback Dru Brown down. Javien Elliot – in his first CFL start – would get the fumble recovery and return it an impressive 23 yards. Unfortunately, the extra possession ended with a Stamps two-and-out.

The first points of the night would eventually come off the shoe of Bombers kicker Sergio Castillo, a 15 yard boot for a field goal to cap off a lengthy 11 play drive with 4:46 remaining in the first half.

Castillo hit again with 5:51 left in the third, this time a 45-yarder to close out a two play series. He would follow that up twice more in the final frame with field goals from 46 yards and 50 yards.

Paredes broke the Bombers’ shutout with a field goal of his own with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth, a 32 yard kick to round out a four play drive.

Hakunavanhu would get his second touchdown of the season with under two minutes left, a momentum-swinging 57-yard major. The convert was good.

The Stamps then forced a quick Bombers two-and-out and wasted no time with their next possession. After four plays, Paredes put the final nail in the coffin after a 27-yard field goal with nine seconds on the clock.

Up next the Stampeders head to Regina to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the Western Semi-Final Nov. 28. Kickoff is 2 p.m. M.T.
