Paredes Is West’s Top Special Teams Player

Calgary Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes is the West Division finalist for the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.

The West finalists were determined by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) as well as one vote from each division team’s coaching staff. The league winners will be announced on Friday, Dec. 10 as part of Grey Cup week festivities in Hamilton.

This is the third time in his career Paredes has represented the West in the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player category and he won the award in 2013.

In 2021, Paredes led the league with 155 points, 44 field goals and a 91.7-per cent success rate on three-pointers. It’s the fifth season he has hit better than 90 per cent of his field goals and he owns the CFL record for career field-goal accuracy.

Paredes twice kicked a career-high six field goals in a game this season and he had two game-winning kicks on the final play of game – in Week 10 at Saskatchewan and in Week 16 against Winnipeg. Paredes was the CFL’s top performer in Week 11 after kicking six field goals and accounting for 21 points in a win over BC. He finished the regular season with a streak of 19 consecutive successful field goals.

Paredes hit a pair of notable milestones in 2021 – he became the 10th player in CFL history to kick 400 career field goals and he moved into 12th place in all-time league scoring.
