It’s a battle for top spot in the West when the Calgary Stampeders head to Winnipeg for the Red and White’s first Friday Night Football game of the year.

The Stampeders have the opportunity to move to 5-0 for the eighth time in franchise history and first since 2018.

Both teams are coming off dominant road outings in Week 5 as the Stamps cruised over the Elks 49-6 at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium and the Blue Bombers won 43-22 against the Lions at BC Place.

Earning their fourth victory in as many appearances this season, Calgary had a 100-yard receiver in Malik Henry, 100-yard rusher in Ka’Deem Carey and 122-yard missed-field-goal return for a touchdown from player-of-the-week Peyton Logan. Defensively, linebacker Cameron Judge racked up five tackles, one sack and a pair of fumble recoveries including one that went for a 63-yard score.

As for the 5-0 Bombers, Janarion Grant scored on the game’s opening kickoff and Dalton Shoen recorded eight catches for 117 yards and two majors. Three different defenders registered an interception and the Blue and Gold maintained possession for 39 of the 60 minutes of play.

In four of the past five seasons, either the Stampeders or Blue Bombers have won the West Division. They’ve also combined for each of the last three Grey Cup titles.

Calgary and Winnipeg met twice in 2021 with the home side winning a low-score affair on both occasions. After winning 16 of 17 over the Bombers from 2009-16, the Stamps have gone 3-4 in their seven most recent regular-season matchups with their Manitoba counterparts.

Averaging 8.4 yards on first downs and throwing just two interceptions, the Stamps lead the CFL in both statistical categories. The Blue Bombers have yet to allow a rushing touchdown and have a league-best plus-11 turnover ratio.

Following Friday, the Stampeders will be on their second bye in four weeks while Winnipeg will prepare for a trip to Edmonton. Calgary’s next opponent is these same Bombers with McMahon Stadium the venue on Saturday, July 30.
