Stamps Fall Late to the Lions

It was a beautiful night for football from McMahon Stadium but a tough ending for the Stampeders.

The Stamps fell in a heartbreaker 41-40 to the Lions to drop to 5-3 on the season. BC moves to 7-1.

Bo Levi Mitchell  finished the night 18-for-32 for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

Dedrick Mills rushed the ball seven times for 55 yards.

Shawn Bane Jr. had five receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively it was Nick Statz, who made his debut at safety and recorded four tackles to go along with his first career interception.

The game started well for Calgary, until it didn’t. The Stamps forced a two-and-out on BC’s first drive but the ensuing punt was fumbled and recovered by the Lions at the Stampeders 35 yardline.

The turnover led to the first points of the game as Sean Whyte punched a field-goal through from 19 yards out to make it 3-0.

It was a short-lived lead for the Lions as rookie receiver Jalen Philpot returned the ensuing kick 77 yards to the Lions 30.

Mitchell became the Stampeders all-time leader in passing yards on the next play, finding Bane Jr. for eight yards.

The drive stalled and Rene Paredes came out to tie the game at three from 28 yards out.

The defence continued to play well on their next time out, Statz picked off Nathan Rourke in his first career start for the Stamps.

The interception led to a 19 yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Philpot for his first career CFL TD.

The offensive trouble continued for the Lions as they couldn’t get anything going and were forced to punt again, leading to a Paredes 53 yard field-goal tying a career high.

It was 13-3 after the first quarter.

The Stamps got on the board with another turnover early in the second quarter.

Folarin Orimolade intercepted Rourke deep in Lions territory and ran it into the endzone for his first career pick and touchdown.

The Stampeders led 20-3.

The Lions responded on their next drive, moving the ball 78 yards in five plays before Rourke found Rhymes in the endzone to make it 20-10.

Calgary continued to finish drives with points, as Paredes put one through the sticks for the third time in the first half to make the score 23-10.

The Lions seemed to make an adjustment into the second quarter as they found the endzone once again on their next drive as Rourke dove in from one yard out to make the score 23-17 Stampeders.

The punch, counter-punch first half carried on as Calgary marched right back down the field thanks to some big runs from Mills.

The Lions got on the board with about a minute to go, but it was of the rouge variety after a punt through the endzone to make it 30-18 Stampeders.

Calgary had about a minute to work with and got into field-goal position once again, however Paredes missed from 51 yards out and the score remained 30-18 heading into the half.

The Stampeders would continue to score on their first drive of the second half, Paredes hit from 51 yards out to put the Stamps up 33-18.

The Lions provided another counter punch hitting from 38 yards on a field-goal to make the score 33-21.

Another field-goal followed for the Lions after a Stamps fumble to make the score 33-24 early in the fourth quarter.

The Stamps offence slowed down in the second half, Calgary’s next four drives after their latest field-goal saw three punts and a fumble.

BC went for it on a third-and-two around mid-field on their next drive and hit a 53 yard touchdown through the air to make it a two point game, 33-31.

Peyton Logan made a huge mark on the game on the next kickoff taking it all the way to the house for 99 yards, putting the Stamps back ahead by nine, 40-31.

The Lions would not go away.

They drove the field on the next drive, executing a third-and-nine to keep the drive alive before punching it into the endzone from the one yard line.

It was 40-38 with 2:33 to go.

Calgary gained a first down on a 15 yard pass to Kamar Jorden to get the clock below two minutes before punting the ball away to give the Lions one last shot to steal one on the road.

BC started from their own six yard line with 1:20 to go after a great punt by Cody Grace and good coverage down field.

After a roughing the passer call in the endzone, the Lions would drive the ball with intermediate passes before Rourke found Whitehead for 32 yards deep into Stampeder territory.

Sean Whyte hit a 25 yard field-goal with two seconds left on the clock to give the Lions the 41-40 win.
