2025 Training Camp Preview: Defensive Backs

It’s time to take a look at the last line of defence with the DB room.

Longtime CFL coach Barron Miles takes over this group with Dwayne Cameron moving solely into the Director of Canadian scouting position.

Miles is entering his 16th season coaching in the CFL after most recently serving as the Ottawa Redblacks’ defensive coordinator. As a player with the BC Lions and Montreal Alouettes, Miles was a six-time league all-star and a two-time Grey Cup champion. He was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2018.

Feet First

In their first season as Stampeders, Ben Labrosse, Tyler Richardson, and Bentlee Sanders all made the most of their playing time.

Sanders played 16 games and made 10 starts at safety. He recorded 45 tackles including two for loss, three knockdowns, two forced fumbles and one interception.

Richardson appeared in 10 games and made four starts at cornerback while recording 30 tackles, one interception and one knockdown.

Labrosse played in 14 games and made nine starts at field halfback. The 2024 first-round pick tallied 34 tackles including two for loss, four knockdowns and one fumble recovery. In Week 16, he recorded a team-leading eight tackles.

With one season of CFL experience under their belts, the sky is the limit for these three young DBs who are sure to only improve with the more snaps they play.

Caught In A Webb

The Stampeders arguably made their biggest splash in free agency when they landed highly coveted DB Damon Webb. The five-year CFL veteran earned all-CFL honours last year for his standout season that included a league-leading two interception-return touchdowns which happened in the same game against the Toronto Argonauts. The Ohio State product also recorded 68 tackles including eight for loss, five interceptions and two sacks.

Two Rookies To Watch

Calgary signed 10 rookies this off-season to come compete at training camp.

  • Ben DeLuca – DeLuca played 43 games over five years (2016-20) at UNC Charlotte. Over that time, he recorded 313 tackles, 17 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, four interceptions and two sacks. In 2021 he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers and was active for three games.
  • Meiko Dotson – Dotson attended training camp with the Red and White last season and participated in both pre-season games before his subsequent release. He re-signed with Calgary in July and played in the Labour Day rematch against Edmonton.
