The Calgary Stampeders are set up to have a strong, veteran group at linebacker this season.
After three days of camp, the Stamps seem to have three frontrunners to fill the vacant linebacker positions as they head towards their first preseason game on Monday.
Micah Teitz (WILL – weak-side linebacker position), Marquel Lee (MIKE – middle linebacker position) and Derrick Moncrief (SAM – strong-side hybrid linebacker/defensive back position) have been taking first team reps together in 12-on-12 situations so far. Marcus Klund, who is in his first season with the Stamps as linebackers coach, says that group is gelling together nicely.
“The comradery is awesome,” he said. “They are all working really well together, not just those three guys, the whole group are all really coming together really well. They’re feeling each other out and knowing each other’s personalities. It’s a tight group and when it’s a tight group it makes it fun.”
“I’m a beast!” 😤

Despite all three starting linebacker spots being vacant from last season, there is some familiarity with Teitz and Lee joining the Stamps last year and Teitz and Moncrief having played together in Saskatchewan in 2018, 2019 and 2022. Teitz spoke about how the linebackers are meshing so far.
“I played with Moncrief for a long time in Saskatchewan,” he explained. “I’ve got a ton of respect for him, I think he’s one of the best players in the CFL. Marquel was here last year and he proved it right away, that he’s going to be a good player, so I think we’ve got a good group going.”
Teitz will suit up for his hometown team again this year after signing with the Red and White before the 2024 season. He says it’s always special to play in front of the Stampeders crowd.

“It’s awesome,” said Teitz. “Any time you can have your friends and family in the stands for every game and I’m so familiar with the city. I’m helping the boys out with where they should get a rental and stuff like that. I love playing here and it’s such a privilege.”
There are still some big roster decisions to be made between now and Monday, when the first preseason game takes place in B.C, but Klund says his guys will be ready when the live bullets start flying.
“I can’t wait, I’m looking forward to seeing these guys fly around,” Klund said. “To me that’s the most fun day for me as a coach. We see all the hard work the guys put in and then you get to go out there and get somebody else. You get to see them go out there and have fun, let loose, not have nothing to worry about.
“Just go out there, do your job, have fun and play the game that we all love to play.”
