It Just Means More

It’s a milestone year for a legendary rivalry.

For the 60th time in their history, Calgary and Edmonton will go head-to-head in Calgary during Labour Day Weekend.

The provincial rivals are set to battle at 4 p.m. Monday in front of what will be a raucous crowd at McMahon Stadium.

Stampeders receiver Jalen Philpot will partake in his fourth LDC and can’t wait for the opportunity.

“Playing with the Dinos, we always had that rivalry with the Golden Bears so it takes me back to University a little bit,” he explained. “We always want to beat our in-province rival but it’s on an even bigger scale with Labour Day, especially with how our season is going and with Mark Kilam over there and a bunch of guys that were on our team.

“The experience for some of these new guys, it’s going to be packed in here; the all-black uniforms, it’s all a little different when you get that flyover.

“Whenever you’re wearing the all-black and you have the fighter jets out here and it’s packed it hits a little differently.”

The Stamps look to continue their momentum from a season sweep over the Roughriders last week. Philpot has 139 yards receiving since his return from injury and scored a major against Saskatchewan.

“We know what we have in this locker-room,” he said. “We knew early in training camp that we had a special team. It was just one of those things where we had to go out there and show the rest of the league that had us labeled not very good at the start of the year but we just use that as fuel and motivation. We just keep coming out and showing the league what the Stampeders are about.”

The Elks enter Monday’s clash on a three-game winning streak as they look to get back in the playoff picture over the back half of the season.

“They’re a great team,” said Philpot. “They have a great defence, great offence and with Mark Kilam as their head coach they are going to be fueled and ready to go. I think we just have to play our game. We know it’s going to be hyped a little more but we just have to play our game, come in level-headed, play Stampeder football, complimentary football, and hopefully we will come out with a win.”
