Stamps Fall To Lions

The Stamps fell 52-23 to the visiting BC Lions in front of 23,554 Friday night at McMahon Stadium during the annual Indigenous Night celebration.

Starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. left the game in the third quarter after being hit on a run, and backup P.J. Walker had his night end with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter after being tackled on a long TD pass attempt to Erik Brooks.

Quincy Vaughn would finish the night at pivot.

Calgary, coming off a bye week, fell to 8-5 with the loss, while BC improved to 7-7.

STAT PACK

QB Vernon Adams Jr. – 11-for-16, 125 yards, 2 INTs

QB P.J. Walker – 8-for-9, 64 yards, 1 TD

RB Dedrick Mills – 15 carries for 72 yards

The Lions received the opening kickoff and Nathan Rourke marched his team down the field on a six-play drive, the BC pivot running it in from the one-yard line.

Adams Jr. was picked off on the Stamps first drive, his pass attempt for Dominique Rhymes intercepted by Cristophe Beaulieu.

BC was forced to punt on the possession, but on Calgary’s next crack with the ball, former Stamp Micah Awe intercepted Adams Jr. leading to Jeremiah Masoli eventually coming in for Rourke on a first-and-one and punching it into the endzone.

Rourke completed a long bomb to Stanley Berryhill III, then ran it 26 yards himself for the major to increase the lead to 21-0 after one quarter.

Rene Parades booted a 23-yard field-goal early in the second quarter to get the homeside on the board.

But the Lions came back on their next possession with another TD, Rourke hooking up with Justin McInnes on a 35-yard catch and run.

Parades added a 29-yard field goal with one second left in the half , Calgary trailing 28-7 at the break.

Walker came in at quarterback after Adams Jr. left the game in the third quarter, and Awe was penalized on a horse-collar tackle on the drive. After a pair of Mills runs, Vaughn ran it in from the one-yard line.

Rourke answered back for the Lions with a three-yard run with the visitors later adding a field goal to make it 38-14 after three quarters.

Walker aired a ball for Tevin Jones early in the fourth quarter, with Deontai Jones flagged for pass interference on him putting the ball on the 12-yard line for the Stamps. BC challenged the call but after review, it was upheld.

Dedrick Mills had a six-yard run and then Walker tried to leg it in and got close but Calgary was flagged for holding, putting them in a second and 14. Mills ran it to the two-yard line before Walker found Jones in the back of the endzone.

The Stamps went for the two-point convert but it was picked off.

Rourke would find McInnis for another major with 7:02 to play and Paredes hit another field goal, but Zander Horvath would round out the scoring with a long, 70-yard TD run.
