California Love

In his hometown of San Clemente, Calif., quarterback Josh Love and some of his fellow Stampeders are giving back to the community.

After conducting a players-led mini-camp located at The Togethership, an independent private school and sports academy, the players ended their training sessions by hosting a free youth football camp for students who attend the school.

Love has been running the football program there since 2021, and his wife teaches at the school as well.

Set against an iconic California backdrop of palm trees and a warm breeze, around 60 campers ranging from Grades 6 to 12 participated in position-specific drills led by Love and other members of the Stampeders offence.

“We wanted to give back to the school for providing us with the facility,” said Love, “I mean, I don’t see any other guys having access to that type of facility. With the weight room and meeting room and all that stuff, it was really beneficial, for sure.

“So, we did a free camp and a lot of the kids from the school came.”

Love’s fellow quarterback and California native, Vernon Adams Jr., provided the template for how the camp was run to ensure an efficient and fun day for the kids.

Other Stampeders teammates that were on hand to run offensive drills included running back Dedrick Mills and receivers Clark Barnes, Reggie Begelton, Dejon Brissett, Erik Brooks, Tevin Jones, Vyshonne Janusas and Jalen Philpot.

“It was it was a great camp,” said Adams. “I had my son out there too, my son Kash. He is 11 years old; he was out there having a good time as well.

“So, it’s great always giving back to any community. Anywhere we go as pro athletes, we always want to think about giving back to these kids because they’re the next generation.”

The players also handed out team-signed footballs and signed player cards at the end of the session.

“I’ve gotten so much positive feedback,” said Love. “It was really cool. I think it was a really efficient camp, the kids had a blast, and the guys had a blast, too.”

In addition to leading the youth camp for the aspiring future football stars, Love is preparing for a camp of his own.

His second CFL training camp is set to open in less than a month and with a year of Canadian football under his belt, the 29-year-old pivot is feeling more confident heading into the 2026 season.

“I feel really comfortable going in, especially being the second year,” he said. “I credit the coaches, (2025 quarterbacks coach) Dakota Prukop last year, and (offensive coordinator) Pat DelMonaco and those guys for helping get me up to speed and get comfortable with a different type of play in Canada.

“I feel really good, and I’ve had some good meetings this off-season, and I think that’s helped me even more just get a head start for this year.”

Love dressed for six regular-season games last season and made his CFL debut in Week 9 against Ottawa, serving as the backup behind P.J. Walker. In the final game at McMahon Stadium, Love played in the fourth quarter and completed five of eight passes for 67 yards, including a 50-yard connection with Philpot.

“Having another year in the same offence is key because now I can just continue building off what I learned last year and have a great head start into camp and go from there.

“I kind of know what to expect and how quick it is with camp. It goes by really fast and then before we know it, the season’s here.

“So, yeah, I’m really excited. I feel really comfortable and confident coming in.”

The official start of CFL training camp is Sunday, May 10 and the Stampeders hit the field for their first taste of game action at McMahon Stadium for a pre-season tilt against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Victoria Day Monday, May 18 at 1 p.m. MT.
