Stamps Comeback Cut Short

Talk about an edge-of-your-seat game!

This season’s first Battle of the Prairies took place at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night with the Stamps falling to the Roughriders 40-37 in a double-overtime thriller after making a big comeback in the fourth quarter.

Tyreik McAllister’s 120-yard return for a touchdown off a missed field-goal attempt is an early favourite for highlight of the year. On the defensive side of the ball, Clarence Hicks picked up two sacks to make it three on the season for the lineman.

The Roughriders put the ball in the endzone first to take a 10-0 lead just over a minute into the second quarter.

The Stamps defence got the momentum going for the Red & White in the second quarter when Hicks sacked Trevor Harris and LB Marquel Lee recovered the forced fumble in the red zone.

On the following offensive drive, pivot Quincy Vaughn punched in a one-yard rush to bring the Stamps back within three.

Newly acquired kick returner McAllister put his stamp on the game after recovering a missed field-goal attempt and making his long touchdown run. The Stamps snipped the Riders lead down to 23-14 at the half.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter, the Stamps put together a five-play, 78-yard drive that was capped off with another one-yard Vaughn rushing touchdown to cut the Riders lead to 31-24 with 13:34 remaining.

The Stamps weren’t done there.

After a nine-play, 88-yard drive, Adams Jr. connected with Tevin Jones with 34 seconds left in the game to tie it at 31 apiece and send it to overtime.

One overtime wasn’t enough, leaving the game tied at 34 heading into double overtime. The Riders ultimately punched in a one-yard rushing touchdown to secure the win.

NEXT UP

The Stamps will hit the road and head down to the Okanagan to take on the BC Lions as part of the Touchdown Kelowna game from the Apple Bowl Stadium on June 27, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. MT.

The Red and White are back at home in Week 5 for a clash with the Toronto Argonauts on Thursday, July 2 for the second annual Stampede Bowl. That tilt kicks off at 7 p.m. MT.
