A quarter-century of support

While this year marks the 25th anniversary of their 1992 Grey Cup championship, the Red and White also celebrated a longstanding community partnership on Wednesday morning.

The annual CUPS/Stampeders Kickoff Breakfast was held Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel to raise funds for educational, health care, housing and other services offered to Calgarians who need them most.

A strong presence of both current and former Stamps was once again included in the event and they were introduced by Mark Stephen, the voice of the Calgary Stampeders.

Rob Cote, Brad Erdos, Deron Mayo, Bo Levi Mitchell, Charlie Power, Alex Singleton, Adam Thibault, Quinn Smith and Spencer Wilson all attended along with president and general manager John Hufnagel, head coach Dave Dickenson and defensive coordinator DeVone Claybrooks.

In addition, alumni including Jabari Arthur, Jon Cornish, Matt Finlay, Jackie Kellogg, Jesse Lumsden and Stu Laird were present.

Also in the room were family members of the late Sugarfoot Anderson, a lifelong Stampeder who had appeared at the function year after year.

A few words on stage from Hufnagel and Wilson, the Stamps player representative for CUPS, preceded the meal being served as well as a past-meets-present Q&A panel hosted by former offensive lineman and longtime CUPS advocate Bruce Covernton.

Nearly $22,000 was raised through a raffle, 50/50 sale and dozens of bids on limited-edition Stampeder prints featuring an iconic image of Doug Flutie scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the 1992 Western Final.

Alyssa and Willow of the Outriders, presented by Century Downs and Century Casino, then distributed the prizes to the respective winners.

Title sponsor Apache concluded the occasion by presenting CUPS with a cheque for $25,000 generated from the 2017 Breakfast. All proceeds will directly benefit low-income local citizens.
