Stamps fall in 105th Grey Cup

OTTAWA – The Stampeders season has ended in disappointment for the second straight year.

A 27-24 loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa was settled by a 32-yard field goal by Lirm Hajrullahu in the final minute.

Prior to the kick, the Stamps had never trailed in the game

The Stamps fell in overtime in last year’s Grey Cup, losing to the Ottawa RedBlacks.

A 33-yard catch by Kamar Jorden on a third-and-three and a burst up the middle by Jerome Messam from six yards out were the touchdowns in the first half for the Stamps.

The Stampeders went for two points after both TD’s. The first banked off the crossbar but the second was successful via a DaVaris Daniels reception.

Toronto went deep on second down in between the two Calgary scores for a 100-yard major courtesy of DeVier Posey. The passing play was the longest in Grey Cup history, although the ensuing single-point try sailed to the left of the uprights.

Just before heading to the locker room, Rene Paredes was perfect from 39-yards out.

James Wilder Jr.’s two-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half, and Cross secured the two-point conversion to pull within one of Calgary.

Midway through the third, Messam made a reception out of the backfield for his second six-yard score. The opportunity was presented due to a successful challenge from the Calgary sideline after spotting pass interference on Jorden’s defender.

The fourth saw Carrius Vaughn return Jorden’s fumble 110 yards for a touchdown. The two-pointer tied it with 4:15 to go.

On special teams, Ante-Milanovic Lintre got a hand on a Hajrullahu punt attempt to partially block the boot downfield. Later on, the snap from Pierre-Luc Caron went over the head of Rob Maver, forcing the Red and White’s punter to kick the ball out of his own end zone for a safety.

Making his first catch of the game, Marken Michel hauled it in along for sidelines for a 50-yard gain. However, Jorden fumbled deep in Argos territory as Vaughn returned it all the way.
