Christmas in January: A Calgary Tradition Powered by Community
Since 1991, CUPS’ Christmas in January event has been a Calgary tradition that brings warmth, connection, and care to individuals experiencing homelessness during one of the hardest times of the year. For many years, the Calgary Stampeders have been proud partners in this event, showing up in a meaningful way by connecting with guests, helping to serve a delicious turkey dinner, and supporting to create a welcoming, dignified experience for everyone in attendance.
The 37th annual Christmas in January took place on January 21, welcoming more than 200 community members to gather for a festive meal, entertainment, and a sense of belonging. CUPS was thrilled to welcome Stampeders Bryce Bell, Dedrick Mills, and Rene Paredes, who generously volunteered their time to connect with guests throughout the evening, chatting, signing autographs and putting genuine smiles on guests faces.
While there are often many meals and celebrations in December for people experiencing homelessness, those opportunities can fade quickly once the holidays end. Christmas in January was created to fill that gap – offering a warm holiday meal prepared by the Hyatt, winter essentials and continued care to remind Calgary’s most vulnerable that they are not forgotten when the giving season is over.
“January can be an especially difficult time for those who access support at CUPS,” said Elaine Wilson, CEO of CUPS. “Christmas in January is a time to come together, even after the holiday season fades, and create a space that honours dignity and connection, and reminds our community that we are here for them all year long.”
Christmas in January began as a small gathering inspired by Shirley Hopkins, Judy McKearney, and a group of friends who recognized the importance of connection after the holidays. More than three decades later, it has grown into a cornerstone CUPS event, made possible by community partners like the Calgary Stampeders and the Hyatt, who continue to demonstrate the power of compassion, leadership, and care in our city.
