Mitchell wins Herm Harrison Award

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that Bo Levi Mitchell is the winner of the Herm Harrison Memorial Award.

The award, which was instituted in 2013, annually honours a Stampeders player who distinguishes himself in the field of community service. One of the franchise’s all-time greats, Herm Harrison played for the Stampeders from 1964-72 and was a West Division all-star on six occasions and a CFL all-star three times. Harrison settled in Calgary after his playing career and was an active member of numerous community activities as an alumnus. Among the many causes he supported, the Special Olympics were a particular favourite.

“It’s truly an honour to receive this prestigious award,” said Mitchell. “It’s one thing for a player to receive an award for on-field accomplishments but so much more meaningful to be recognized for our work off the field in the community, where we should be spending our time because we have the platform to do so.

“This award is particularly special because it is named after such a great man as Herm Harrison. I was honoured to meet Herm and I believe I know what he stood for and that was being kind and doing the right thing. The guys on this team do a lot of amazing, selfless things for some great causes in the community and I’m just trying to keep up. This award is for all of them, as well.”

Mitchell works with a number of charitable organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area and Vecova, an organization whose mandate is to help create a society in which individuals with disabilities are integral and valued members.

The 2015 season saw the launch of Bo’s Quarterback Club, a program that gave youth players and coaches the opportunity to attend Stampeders home games as his guest and to meet with him afterwards. Mitchell also made special appearances to schools and youth football practices.

Last month, the Calgary quarterback launched Mitchell’s Miracle Day as he and his wife Maddie collected contributions from individuals and businesses and brought two underprivileged youngsters on a Christmas shopping spree.

Mitchell also takes part in numerous other community endeavours including fundraising events and the Stamps’ off-season basketball program.

A formal presentation of the Herm Harrison Memorial Award will take place at Fanfest in May.
