Thanksgiving in Toronto

In a Week 16 duel, the 12-1-1 Calgary Stampeders will hit the road to take on the 5-9 Toronto Argonauts on Monday at 2 p.m. MDT.

The Thanksgiving Day contest will mark the Red and White’s first game on the national holiday since 2010 when they were dealt a lopsided loss by the host Montreal Alouettes.

Making their BMO Field debut on Monday, the Stamps will be playing on a natural grass surface for the first time since their Touchdown Atlantic appearance at New Brunswick’s Moncton Stadium on Sept. 25, 2011. Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton was the last full-time CFL facility to feature a grass field before transitioning to synthetic FieldTurf in time for the 2010 campaign.

Calgary is 5-1-1 as the visitors thus far while the Argos are 2-5 at their new digs.

Unbeaten since June, the Stamps will be facing a squad looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

Last week saw the Stampeders cruise to a 36-17 victory in Hamilton as DaVaris Daniels put on an inspired performance. Toronto stumbled to a 38-11 defeat to the hometown Als after conceding 14 points off turnovers.

In 2015, Calgary swept both matchups against the Argonauts with Bo Levi Mitchell posting a total of 569 passing yards to go with a pair of TD tosses in both battles.

Sitting at No. 1 in the league, the Stamps average 7.2 yards per play on first down. Meanwhile, the Argos manage a meagre 6.1 yards of first-down production to occupy ninth spot.

Sitting second and third respectively in terms of time of possession, just two seconds of ball control separate the soon-to-be opponents. Each club also has scored three defensive majors.

Friday, Oct. 21 is the date set for the final meeting between Calgary and Toronto, serving as McMahon Stadium’s regular-season finale for 2016.

Offensive lineman Dan Federkeil, newly-singed pass rusher Cordarro Law and wideout Joe West draw into the fold for Monday. Defensive end Brandon Boudreaux, guard Brad Erdos and running back Tory Harrison come off the Stampeders’ 46-man roster.

Key Matchup

Drew Willy, making only his second start at quarterback for the Argos since being traded from Winnipeg, will be doing so with a revamped receiving corps. After four Argonauts’ pass-catchers were recently released – including a pair of Week 15 starters – Brian Jones and Llevi Noel will likely see increased roles against a stingy Stamps defence that leads all teams in opponent completion percentage at 65.1 per cent.
