Mayo sidelined

Saturday’s 22-8 win over came at a steep price for the Calgary Stampeders.

Veteran linebacker and defensive team captain Deron Mayo had to be carted off the field after suffering what appeared to be a serious leg injury.

“It didn’t look good for Deron,” said Stamps head coach Dave Dickenson at Sunday’s light workout at McMahon Stadium. “It was an unfortunate play. He just got himself caught and twisted a little bit. We’ll have more information (later) but I don’t think we’ll be seeing him for a while.”

Mayo has been a fixture at weak-side linebacker for the Stamps and is the team’s leading tackler with 78.

Look for Glenn Love and Maleki Harris to get additional playing time at linebacker while Mayo is sidelined.

The news is somewhat more encouraging for offensive lineman Shane Bergman, although his status for Friday’s home game against Toronto is unknown at this point.

“I’m more encouraged that it’s nothing super serious,” said Dickenson. “We’re still shorthanded on the offensive line so we have to figure out who can play. Hopefully Shane is a quick healer.”
