Calgary Stampeders vs BC Lions
Western Final
McMahon Stadium
Sunday, Nov. 20
2:30 p.m. kickoff
In a high-stakes showdown, the Calgary Stampeders are set to battle the BC Lions in the Western Final at McMahon Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. MDT.
Putting their perfect 9-0 home record on the line, the Stampeders play BC in the Western Final for the seventh time in franchise history. The Stamps sport a 3-3 record in such clashes dating back to 1964.
The winner of tomorrow’s tilt will face the East Division champion in the 104th Grey Cup from Toronto’s BMO Field on Nov. 27. Either the Edmonton Eskimos or Ottawa RedBlacks will provide the opposition.
A 2014 championship was the most recent Grey Cup appearance for Calgary while the Lions last qualified in 2011.
Including a mid-June preseason clash, Sunday signifies the fifth time the Stampeders and Lions will have faced one another this year. The Red and White were outscored 20-18 in Vancouver to kick off their 2016 campaign before beating BC 44-41 in overtime from Southern Alberta. In their third regular-season matchup, the Stamps came out on top in convincing fashion by a score of 37-9 back at BC Place.
Calgary is coming off consecutive bye weeks with a Week 20 break followed by an automatic berth in the Western Final.
Setting a franchise record with a 15-2-1 mark enabled the Stampeders to claim top spot in the division whereas the Lions’ 12-6 finish was good for second place.
An Oct. 30 duel with Montreal – the Stamps’ most recent outing – handed Calgary only their second loss of the season. The Red and White failed to score a touchdown and threw a pair of interceptions en route to a 17-8 shortfall.
As for BC, the Lions stormed back to take down the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers in last week’s Western Semi-Final. Jeremiah Johnson ran for 110 yards on just 11 carries and five different Lions recorded at least four receptions apiece.
Sunday’s matinee will feature the two teams that led the CFL in both time of possession and punting average. The two sides also tied for a league-best 52 sacks led by Calgary’s Charleston Hughes (16) and BC’s Alex Bazzie (11) respectively.
Expect Juwan Brescacin, Bakari Grant, Maleki Harris, William Langlais, Marquay McDaniel, Quinn Smith and Junior Turner to be inserted into the lineup. Max Caron, Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, Ben D’Aguilar, Tory Harrison, Zach Minter, Randy Richards and Joe West are removed from the 46-man roster.
Key Matchup
Two of the CFL’s brightest young stars will be at the controls with Bo Levi Mitchell leading the Stampeders and Jonathon Jennings guiding the Lions. After he was held out of action against the Alouettes, Mitchell will be under centre for the first time in 29 days. Meanwhile, Jennings will be seeking to improve upon a disappointing outing in last season’s Western Semi-Final which saw him pulled in favour of Travis Lulay during the second quarter as the visitors were dealt a 35-9 defeat at McMahon.
