Keeping Up The Pressure

Calgary , AB - September 3rd 2018 The Cagary Stampeders edged out the Edmonton Eskimos 23-20 in the 2018 Labour Day Classic (Rob McMorris/Calgary Stampeders)

Get ready for a quick attack.

After recording his first sack of the 2018 season during Monday’s 20-23 Labour Day Classic victory, Stampeders defensive lineman Junior Turner is eager to keep up the pressure.

Of course, if he wants another one this weekend when the Stampeders head to Edmonton for a rematch, he knows it won’t be without a challenge.

Mike Reilly isn’t an easy guy to take down,” said Turner. “He stands in the pocket, he’s going to take the hit, and he’s going to deliver the ball…I was trying to pry that ball out, and he wasn’t letting it go so there’s definitely a respect there for him.”

And getting to Reilly in the first place?

An even bigger effort.

“They make me look small don’t they?” Laughed Turner, referring to the Eskimos’ offensive line.

“I’m 6’3 and I was out there like ‘gollee these boys have got some tree trunk height.’

“But that’s just the game, and we’re ready for another physical battle.”

Indeed they are.

It is the Battle of Alberta, after all.

“Our key is to just get off the ball,” Turner explained.

“Everything starts with a get off on D-line, we have to get off that ball. And if we don’t – it’s going to be a long day, especially for our secondary. We have to work at all three levels together in unison, it starts with us getting off the ball, it’s going to help everybody else do their jobs easier.”

And anything to aid fellow teammates will be crucial this weekend, as they take on the closely matched Eskimos once again with a few less men, and just five days to recover.

“Even though it was a short week we put some stuff in,” said Turner. “We worked on stuff, saw what we did wrong, there’s always stuff you can clean up, we just went back to the details.

“(After that,) it’s about focus and passion, that’s what Dickey (Dave Dickenson) is saying, focus and passion.

“We’re going to line up, focus on the game plan that’s been distributed to us, execute that at a high level, and go out there and let everything take care of itself.”

As for the opportunity for the Red & White to sweep the season series against their longtime rivals?

It’s adding no pressure.

Edmonton’s just another team, in another game, in another battle for their ultimate goal.

“It’s not even about the sweep, it’s about the next game,” said Turner.

“You go every game to win, they’re the next opponent, they’re in our way of our next victory so that’s what we have to focus on.

“We’ve got one goal which is get to the championship and win it.”
