Camp recap: May 30

Training camp continued on Tuesday with a pair of practices at McMahon Stadium.

Camp will run daily until the pre-season opener at McMahon on Saturday, June 11 against the Edmonton Eskimos.

Mustangs reunion

It’s not uncommon for college teammates to cross paths again in the pros, but Taylor Reed and Ja’Gared Davis are taking the reunion to another level.

Not only did both players attend Southern Methodist University, but their four-year careers covered the same 2009-12 span. What’s more, they played shoulder-to-shoulder on the weak side of a 3-4 linebacking crew, with Reed on the inside and Davis on the outside.

Davis, who joined the Stamps on Monday, was excited to join his college teammates — quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell is also a former SMU Mustang — but he chose to keep his arrival a surprise for Reed.

“When I got the news,” said Davis, who will line up at defensive end for the Stamps, “I didn’t even tell him. I just surprised him when I showed up in the meeting room.”

“I called him,” said Reed, “and he told me he was flying up to Canada. I thought it was Saskatchewan because he worked out with them. He said, ‘No, I’m going to Montreal.’ Then at team meetings, he comes and pulls my hat and I was wondering, ‘Who’s that?’ Then I saw his face. It was complete shock, man. I’m happy to have him here.”

As long-time colleagues, surely no one is better to give an evaluation of the other?

“He plays with a lot of passion,” said Davis of Reed. “He leaves it all out there on the field. On every play, he’s going to give you his all.”

“If I was scouting him,” responded Reed when asked about Davis, “I would say ‘Be careful,’ because he always goes for the hit-stick. If you are a wide receiver catching a shallow route, you might want to get your head around or get down.”

Quotable

Dave Dickenson on the first few days of his first camp as a head coach: “It’s different. I feel like I had time to organize myself for speeches and that sort of thing, but I’m still just a football guy. I like the game and I like to interact with the players. I have more interaction with the defensive side. I sat in on their meeting and learned more on that side. Special teams as well. I have less to do, I like doing individual drills, but I have to let me coaches coach. I like the process and so far so good..”

Tomorrow’s schedule

There is a single practice on Tuesday with the session running from 9:05 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. ENG cameras will be permitted to shoot from approximately 10 to 10:20 a.m.
