About last night …

Here’s a closer look at Friday’s comeback win over the BC Lions:

Comeback kids

Friday’s game in two words?

Oh, man.

In three words?

What a night.

In four?

What a crazy night.

Calgary’s comeback from a 15-point deficit after the three-minute warning to claim a victory isn’t the kind of thing you see every day, but regular patrons at McMahon Stadium have seen similar thrillers unfold in recent seasons.

  • In 2012, the Stamps were down by 17 points to Saskatchewan with a little more than five minutes left to play. Calgary — with the help of a backup quarterback named Bo Levi Mitchell — rallied to tie the contest and force overtime, where Nik Lewis’ third touchdown of the night gave the Stamps an improbable 41-38 victory over the previously unbeaten Roughriders
  • A year later, the Stamps were down by 24 points after one quarter against Montreal. Not only did they erase that deficit, setting a CFL record for largest first-quarter differential overcome, they wound up beating the Alouettes by 11 points
  • In 2014, the Red and White spotted the Toronto Argonauts a 29-3 lead before rallying for a 40-33 victory. That tied a franchise record for largest deficit overcome for a win

Wild West shootout

With a combined total of 84 points, Friday’s game was the highest-scoring affair for the Stamps since 91 points were put up in the 2011 Touchdown Atlantic game against Hamilton, won 55-36 by the Tiger-Cats.

It was also only the third time in franchise history the Stamps have won despite giving up 40 or more points.

Oct. 17, 1982: 55-48 vs Hamilton
Oct. 21, 1990: 48-42 at Hamilton
July 29, 2016: 44-41 vs BC (OT)

On the fast track

In his fifth season and with a Grey Cup MVP award and all-star honours already to his credit, it’s easy to forget that Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell is only 26 years old.

With Friday’s 364 passing yards — it was Mitchell’s fourth straight 300-yard game — and three touchdowns, the Texas Gunslinger keeps adding to his already impressive credentials.

With 13 games still to go this season, here’s how Mitchell compares with other great CFL signal-callers. Listed are the 10 all-time leaders in career passing yards and where they stood statistically at the end of their 26-year-old seasons.

Team effort

On Friday, Greg Wilson and Bakari Grant became the 10th and 11th Stampeders players in five games to get into the end zone.

Grant, Wilson, Marquay McDaniel, Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, Anthony Parker, Jerome Messam and Kamar Jorden all have receiving majors while Messam, Tory Harrison and Andrew Buckley have rushing scores.

The other TD came courtesy of a Joe Burnett pick-six in Winnipeg.

In case you missed it . . .
