Stamps round out coaching staff

Calgary Stampeders head coach/general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the hiring of running backs coach Rick Campbell, which completes the club’s coaching staff for the 2010 Canadian Football League season.

Campbell has coached in the CFL for 11 seasons, most recently as special teams Staff_100219.jpgcoordinator/defensive backs coach for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Prior to that, he spent 10 seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos.

“Rick is a proven defensive coach and his experience on that side of the ball provides a valuable perspective in our offensive meetings,” said Hufnagel. “He also has a lot of experience coaching special teams and is a great addition to the staff. I know he’s excited about the opportunity to contribute and continue to expand his knowledge.”

The rest of Calgary’s coaching staff includes Chris Jones (defensive coordinator and assistant director of player personnel/football operations), Mark Kilam (special teams coordinator), Cornell Brown (defensive line), Kris Sweet (offensive line), Corey Chamblin (defensive backs), Pete Costanza (receivers), Dave Dickenson (quarterbacks) and Brent Monson (linebackers/strength and conditioning).

“I’m extremely comfortable and confident with our group of coaches,” said Hufnagel. “We have a combination of youth and experience with everyone very determined to make the Calgary Stampeders successful.”

Hufnagel also announced that in addition to John Murphy joining the club last week as director of player personnel, Michael Petrie has been appointed as director of football operations.

Petrie was promoted from his role as director of community and media relations. He will be responsible for managing the salary cap, handling the club’s football operations duties and continuing to oversee the media relations department.

“Mike has been handling a lot of football operations responsibilities over the past two seasons and this is just a natural progression,” said Hufnagel.

In his third season as head coach, Hufnagel will continue to assist with the club’s offence. Following the departure of coordinator George Cortez, he will take a more active role in the day-to-day offensive work and game-planning process.

Dickenson was Calgary’s running backs coach in 2009 and will handle the quarterbacks in 2010. He will call the offensive plays on game days and will be heavily involved in game planning. He enters his second season as a coach following a prolific career in the CFL. Sweet is back for his fourth season with the Red and White — all as offensive line coach — and Costanza enters his third season as receivers coach.

Kilam was promoted to special teams coordinator from his 2009 role as linebackers/strength and conditioning coach. He is in his sixth season with the Stamps.

Defensively, Brown is back to coach Calgary’s front for a third season, while Chamblin enters his third season as the Stamps’ secondary coach. Monson rounds out the defensive staff as he was elevated from his 2009 role of video assistant.
