Stamps face Lions in key clash

The playoff battle in the Canadian Football League’s West Division continues tonight in Vancouver as the Stampeders face the BC Lions. Kickoff at BC Place is 8 p.m. MDT.

Fans in Calgary can catch all the action at the official Road Game Tweet-up at Shark Club Deerfoot Meadows, which will show the game on their 17-foot TV wall. Players and members of the Outriders will be in attendance.

The Stampeders (8-5) can claim a share of first place in the West if they can knock off the Lions (9-4). Only six points separate top to bottom in the West heading into the contest as the Saskatchewan Roughriders (who face Toronto on Thanksgiving Monday) are 7-6 while the fourth-place Edmonton Eskimos improved to 6-8 with a Friday-night win over Hamilton.

“All the games from now on in are going to be important,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “It is a close race and this is a good opportunity. It’s tough to play at BC Place because (the Lions) have such an excellent football team.”

The Stamps are looking to avenge their only lopsided loss of the season — a 34-8 setback to BC on July 28 at McMahon Stadium. Since that game, Calgary is 6-2.

“You have to learn from every game,” said Hufnagel. “I think we’ve gotten better since that last game. We didn’t hang with them for all four quarters (during the previous meeting). It was a close game until about the middle of the third, then it went downhill from there.

“We just didn’t play good football. That happens once in a while. And when you play a good football team like BC and you don’t play good football, it’s going to show.”
