Camp recap: June 3

Friday marked the sixth day of training camp as the players hit the field for both a morning and an afternoon session.

Please don’t stop the music

Fans dropping by McMahon Stadium to take in the first week of training camp have been watching some new faces on the field as well as listening to a new tradition during the early stages of practice.

That’s because linebackers and strength and conditioning coach Brent Monson has been compiling a series of songs to play over the loudspeaker, much to the delight of the rookies and veterans alike.

“We just wanted to get a little more energy in the warm-up and individuals,” said the eighth-year coach following Friday’s second of two practices. “It came from the head coach (Dave Dickenson) and I’ve just been mixing it up.”

As for who has the final word on the playlists, Monson explained that he’s open for suggestions, but only from fellow coaches. But no matter which songs get airtime, there’s a good chance everyone’s genre of choice gets some exposure.

“I’ve been taking a couple requests,” Monson offered. “Some of the coaches have given me a few but I haven’t let any of the players give me any yet, though. But it’s been mostly me picking it out – country, metal, hip-hop, Michael Jackson. I’ve just been keeping it fresh.”

During a time of the year in which players follow a strict, grueling routine of on-field work and meeting-room sessions for multiple weeks, Monson’s mix tapes may be just what the doctor ordered.

“Everyone’s curious as to what they’re going to hear every day,” he said. “It’s been fun.”

Quotable

Dave Dickenson on big plays being made in training camp so far: “I really believe to win in this league, it’s (with) explosive plays, both defensively and offensively. It’s a little different as a head coach to see a long ball completed on your D. You’re happy for a second and then you’re like, ‘All right, who messed up?’ But there have been some great plays and great pass rushes, as well.”
