Letters from camp: Rob Maver

It was a great rookie show.

Guys opened up strong — there was a good impersonation of Coach Carter and Coach Claybrooks that was spot on, might I add. Then there were some good musical numbers, some good dances, some good songs . . .

It was a pretty good night. I say it would be the second-best rookie show I’ve seen since I’ve been here. The only one that was better was 2014 with Pierre Lavertu and Brander Craighead — that’s a skit that stands out to me.

But if we’re talking about all-time best rookie skit, we’re going to have to go with Na’Shan Goddard and Brett Jones. That one just takes the cake, and it’s not even close. They were roommates during camp and Brett Jones told the funny side of what it was like to room with Na’Shan. This included his daily habits — Na’Shan was a very habitual person — and also the way that he spoke. It was a very unique and comical manner and Brett emulated that to perfection.

Rookies weren’t the only ones who performed for us last night. Quinn Smith and Micah Johnson are both very talented.

Let’s start with Quinn. He’s a guitar player and he’s very good and he has a really good voice. He wrote a very funny song and it was really good. He does shows around town for various causes and I encourage people to check it out.

Micah does some rap. He makes up his own beats and last night he treated us to a freestyle. If freestyling is your cup of tea, he was pretty good. As they say, he spit some good bars.

But overall, the night was about the rookies and getting to know the rookies better. Just relaxing and building that camaraderie and building that team feeling. That’s what the night is truly about.
