The Calgary Stampeders earned a convincing 48-23 victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks at McMahon Stadium on Saturday afternoon thanks to major contributions on both sides of the ball.

Calgary has now won all six of their home games and have been victorious in nine straight contests overall.

A 90-yard punt single by Ottawa’s Sergio Castillo concluded the RedBlacks first drive as the visitors were the first to find the scoreboard.

On the initial offensive series for the Stamps, Bo Levi Mitchell spotted Bakari Grant for a 50-yard gain before Andrew Buckley snuck across the goal line shortly thereafter. The ensuing two-point attempt was no good with just over five minutes gone in the opening quarter.

Attempting a 48-yard field goal, Chris Milo would then split the uprights to draw within two points of the Red and White.

However, in direct response, Jerome Messam’s 32-yard catch-and-run preceded a Marquay McDaniel grab over the middle for a 24-yard touchdown. The two-point try was once again intended for DaVaris Daniels, but the ball fell incomplete for a second time.

Juron Criner of Ottawa, making his CFL debut, made an acrobatic 39-yard reception, but Milo soon trotted on for a boot of 46 yards as the stanza came to an end.

As the second quarter began, McDaniel was left all alone for a 39-yard snag of his own. Two plays later, Messam crashed his way into the end zone and McDaniel finally registered a two-point convert for a 13-point Calgary advantage.

But the RedBlacks answered quickly, with Ernest Jackson capping off a six-play, 86-yard possession with a 36-yard TD.

Then, an outstanding effort by Juwan Brescacin enabled the rookie receiver to haul in a one-hander off a 25-yard toss from Mitchell.

The next scoring play came courtesy of Rene Paredes‘ second field goal of the afternoon, this time coming from 40 yards out.

Jamar Wall then jumped in front of a Trevor Harris pass for a wide-open interception and sidestepped a pair of Ottawa players to find pay dirt. The turnover went the other way for a total of 60 yards.

A seven-yard sack by Charleston Hughes closed out the half.

Midway through the third, Rob Maver’s punt went out of bounds at the RedBlacks two-yard line, but Harris connected with Jackson on the very next play from scrimmage for a pickup of 41 yards.

Maver’s next punt wasn’t nearly as favourable for the home side, as Tristan Jackson returned the kick 53 yards before Maver desperately wrestled him to the turf. The runback did set up a four-yard touchdown from Greg Ellingson, although rookie Shaquille Richardson would break up the potential two-pointer.

A Stamps punt-single in the fourth period pushed their lead to 11, but Ellingson’s 63-yard reception deep downfield would enable the RedBlacks to add a Milo chip-shot.

Another highlight-reel play was made when Daniels kept one foot in bounds and secured the ball with only his right hand for a marvelous 10-yard score.

Ja’Gared Davis’ first career touchdown – a 13-yard scoop and score – was then added off a sack and forced fumble by Micah Johnson.

A 30-yard kick from Paredes would wrap up the scoring.

Saturday, Sept. 24 will see the Stampeders host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at 3 p.m. MDT in a matchup of the CFL’s two hottest teams.
