Hughes’ star keeps shining

Who would have thought that a kid attending a Stamps open tryout in Detroit on a whim would go on to play 10 seasons (and counting!) and tie the club’s all-time sack record?

Never bet against Charleston Hughes, who recorded his 99th career sack on Oct. 28 against the Edmonton Eskimos. That take-down tied Will Johnson, who donned Red and White from 1989 to 1996.

Johnson, who is now a police officer in Calgary, stopped by Stamps practice this summer and posed for a picture with Hughes

Tuesday, Hughes became one of eight players in Stamps history to be named a CFL all-star on at least four occasions.

“It’s always meaningful to be voted an all-star,” says the Michigan native. “I’m just thankful that I’m able to continue having an impact on the game like that.”

The Saginaw Sackmaster is coming off his second consecutive CFL sack title and the third of his career. He’s the first player to lead the CFL in sacks in back-to-back seasons since Cameron Wake did it in 2007 and 2008 for the BC Lions.

The only other Stampeder to win a sack title since the stat started being officially recorded in 1981 is – you guessed it – Will Johnson, who won it twice.

“All I can say to Will is that he may have gotten his sacks in less games, but I’m getting more recognition,” laughs Hughes, who has made a habit out of some friendly ribbing with Johnson.

With numerous accolades, awards and a pair of Grey Cups under his belt, Hughes says he isn’t finished yet.

The 33-year-old is under contract for at least one more season and plans to add to the record books.

He is just one sack away from 100, which will make him just the 11th player in CFL to reach that milestone. He also needs just seven take-downs to move into the CFL’s top 10 all-time list.

“I want to keep playing as long I can,” says Hughes. “As long as I’m healthy and that I keep producing on the field, I want to keep going for as many years as possible.”
