Six Defensive Backs Added To Roster

The Calgary Stampeders have signed international defensive backs Devin Butler, Tay Glover-Wright, Gump Hayes, Tre Roberson, Mark Roberts and Julian Wilson.

Devin Butler

Butler played his senior season at Syracuse in 2017 and recorded 20 tackles including two tackles for a loss, one sack and two pass breakups in 12 games. He played his first three seasons at Notre Dame and played 37 games for the Fighting Irish, collecting 39 tackles, one interception and seven pass breakups.

Tay Glover-Wright

Glover-Wright originally signed with the Stampeders on Oct. 17, 2017. He was activated for a Week 20 game against Winnipeg and recorded a pair of tackles. Glover-Wright signed with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons in 2014 and later spent time on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad before joining the Indianapolis Colts and appearing in two games during the 2015 season. He has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. In college, Glover-Wright played 27 games over two seasons (2012-13) at Utah State and had 69 total tackles including five tackles for loss as well as one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 10 pass breakups. He also had 20 carries for 105 yards and 19 kickoff returns for 429 yards.

Hayes signed with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent and attended the team’s 2017 training camp. Hayes played 25 games over two seasons at Arizona State and in his senior season he had 42 tackles including three tackles for loss, three interceptions and six pass breakups.

Roberson signed with the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and spent time on the club’s practice squad. He played quarterback in college including two seasons at Illinois State, establishing school records for career rushing yards (1,806) and touchdowns (22) by a quarterback. He threw for 5,446 career yards for the Redbirds and had 48 touchdown passes. He started his collegiate career at Indiana and was the first quarterback in school history to start as a true freshman.
He is the grandson of Canadian Football Hall of Fame member Larry Highbaugh.

Mark Roberts

Roberts attended training camp with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2017 and spent four weeks on the Roughriders’ practice roster during the 2017 season. Roberts was a receiver in college including his final two seasons at Lamar, where he was a teammate of Stamps receiver Reggie Begelton. With the Cardinals, he made 79 receptions for 1,795 yards and a school-record 21 touchdowns in 24 games. He earned first-team all-Southland Conference honours in 2014 after hauling in 46 passes for 1,157 yards and 13 majors. He transferred to Lamar from the University of Houston.

Julian Wilson

Wilson originally signed with the Stampeders on Sept. 12, 2017, and he appeared in two games, recording one defensive tackle. He has spent NFL time with Baltimore, Kansas City and Minnesota. Wilson played four seasons at Oklahoma and made 99 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and four interceptions and had 15 pass breakups.
