Jones Keeping it Simple in Year 2

Stampeders Training Camp isn’t easy.

But when you’ve already experienced it, it becomes a little less challenging.

Linebacker Riley Jones is back for his second camp with the Stamps, and he’s more prepared than ever this time around.

“It’s been a big help going into my second year compared to last year,” he said.

“Getting to know what the coaches want on the field, what they want when we’re watching film, it’s all the little things, and all the little details.

“I’ve had a year under my belt to figure out the defence and special teams. I’m feeling good, feeling confident, and excited for the season to get started here.”

As usual, it’s been a rigorous first two weeks at training camp, practicing day-in and day-out, but there’s no complaints from Jones.

“Even when you’re tired, and your feet are killing you, you come out and have fun,” he shared.

“I get to come out here, play the sport I’ve played my entire life, and I get paid to do it…You build off everybody around you, and it’s been an awesome time.”

This season Jones looks to build off a solid rookie year; in the 2017 campaign he played in 17 games, where he had three defensive tackles, 12 special-teams tackles and two QB pressures.

In order to find that same success this year, Jones just plans on keeping it simple.

“I’m just going to keep doing my job,” he said.

“Do what the coaches want, listen to what the coaches want, and if they need me to change things I will. You just have to be a team player, don’t try to do too much – just make plays.”

Jones will get his first chance to make plays come Friday, as the Stamps take on the BC Lions in their first pre-season tilt starting at 7 p.m. at McMahon Stadium.

“A lot of guys are going to compete to make this team, and make this roster, guys are going to be flying around,” said Jones.

“It’s going to be an awesome atmosphere, hopefully some good weather out here, and I’m just looking to have some fun, make some plays, and play Stamps football.”
