106th GREY CUP PREVIEW: OTT @ CGY

The storm is coming in.

And tomorrow, it’s going to pour.

Everything is on the line for the Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks tomorrow, as they face off in the 106th Grey Cup at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton starting at 4 p.m. MT.

After five days of preparation, the Red & White are dialed in – and determined to stop history from repeating itself.

“I’m just excited; it’s the quiet before the storm,” said defensive lineman Micah Johnson. “Everybody has got a sense of locked in, a sense of focus, I know we’re ready to come out here to get the job done.”

It’s a tall task for the D Line, though, as they look to slow down Ottawa’s offensive powerhouses who most recently put up 457 yards in an extraordinary 46-27 victory over the Hamilton Tiger Cats Nov. 18.

“They’re a rhythm offence,” Johnson said. “I think Trevor (Harris) is a rhythm quarterback so we just have to be disruptive and throw off the rhythm as much as we can.”

It’s not just Harris and his capable receiving corps that poses a threat, though.

They’ll also have to keep tabs on Redblacks runningback William Powell, who most recently put up 1,362 yards rushing this season.

“He’s a great running back, I think he can do it all though,” head coach Dave Dickenson said of the versatile offensive weapon. “He’s a good blocker good in the pass game, and he’s really good at cutting and reading the lineman’s blocks

“I think a lot of things they do is predicated off the run, it’s a lot of play action, quick throws, and a lot of receivers coming across the ball motion late and getting open. But you can’t really focus on one guy with Ottawa, they’ve got just as many weapons as anybody and they’re playing really well … Our D will have their hands full.”

They’ve got a good idea of how to take the power away from the Redblacks, though.

“Just stopping them on first down, that’s going to be a major key,” said Jameer Thurman. “Limiting all the weapons they have and just playing our defence.

“We’ll do what we do and if we do it to the best of our ability we’ll be fine.”

Offensively, the Stampeders’ receiving corps looks a little different than last week, with the addition of DaVaris Daniels and Bakari Grant to the slotback position.

“He’s a big time player,” Dickenson said of Daniels, who has been out since September due to injury.

“He’s had some of his biggest games in the big game, and he’s a trustworthy guy, he’s been pushing hard….I feel health-wise he’s passed the hurdles, he’s showed me he can do it in practice, and now it’s just a matter of if it is the best lineup for our team”

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell is confident that it is.

“Everybody that’s playing I’ve built chemistry with either recently or in the past,” he said. “I’m excited about the guys we have in, we wouldn’t be putting them in if we didn’t think they were prepared and ready to go, and they weren’t the best group so go … We’ve worked a lot together and we’ve been talking a lot, and we’re going to continue to do that up until game time.”

“By the time seven o’clock rolls around, I’m cutting the TV off and making sure I’m studying as much as I can and going over it with Bo in meeting rooms,” agreed receiver Chris Matthews who is set to make his first Grey Cup appearance. “I’m just trying to do as much as I can so when we get out here we can play freely.”

And even with a projected high of -1C tomorrow, you can expect the offence will be bringing some heat to Commonwealth Stadium tomorrow evening

“I’m a dominant person, so that’s all I’m trying to bring to the table tomorrow, that fire, that dog mentality that we preach about,” said Mitchell. “Eric (Rogers) and Bakari Grant and all the other receivers … people expect a lot from us so we’re going to go out there and show it, and then some.”
