Love, Cfl Style

EDMONTON – Opposites attract.

Especially for CFL fans Deb Strickland and Vincent Rulé.

She’s a Stampeders fan, him a diehard Ottawa Redblacks booster.

Today they’ll be cheering on their respective squads, sitting side-by-side at Commonwealth Stadium in the 106th Grey Cup.

A year from now, the engaged couple will tie the knot.

“For me, this is my third Grey Cup and the second time I’ve been able to see my team in it,” said Rulé.

“First one he’ll see them lose,” joked Strickland.

It’s not exactly the Montagues and Capulets, but one may think this year’s championship battle could make things a tad ackward for them, however their love for the CFL is what brought them together in the first place.

“We got engaged at Grey Cup last year,” said Rulé, on the eve of the big game Saturday. “It’s actually a year ago today.”

Their relationship began in 2016 when they met at a CFL game and has blossomed partly because of the league they hold so dear.

“The first year we weren’t engaged or dating,” said Strickland. “We had just met that first year.”

“We had met at the season-opener that year,” added Rulé.

The engagement didn’t take place until they were in Rulé’s hometown of Ottawa for last year’s Grey Cup.

“CFL is how we met and we met in Ottawa, so for me it just made sense to propose then,” explained Rulé.

“And my entire family was out there for Grey Cup, so it worked well,” added Strickland.

The couple is attending their third straight Grey Cup this year.

And they know that regardless of the outcome on Sunday, love trumps football.

“At the end of the day, it’s a game. We’re both going to cheer for our teams, but no matter how loud we cheer, we don’t really have an impact on the game. When it’s over, one of us is going to be happy and one of us is going to be sad, but we’re still getting married.”

And when they are hitched in May of next year, they’ll be surrounded by the friends they’ve made because of the CFL.

In fact, those people make up most of the guest list.

“For our wedding next year, our guest list, only 11 guests are family,” said Strickland. “The rest are our CFL Twitter family. There’s over 100 of them.”

“It’s going to be just one giant CFL party,” laughed Rulé.

And speaking of CFL parties, they’ve been taking in the different events throughout Grey Cup, including Stamps House.

“It’s like going to a family reunion once a year when you go to Grey Cup,” said Strickland. “You can catch up with everybody who you may have run into during the regular season but you kept in touch with over Twitter. It’s amazing.”

But the biggest thing on the schedule this weekend, of course, is the game on Sunday.

And they’re both certain that it’ll be their team hoisting the trophy when the clock hits zero.

“I really don’t think we lose three in a row,” Strickland said. “I think we’re going to pull this one out, but I think it’s going to be tight.”

“I’m not one to predict, but I have confidence in my team,” said Rulé.
