Stamps Make Final Preparations For Cfl Draft

The Calgary Stampeders are slated to pick first overall when the Canadian Football League draft is held on Thursday, Apr. 30.

The eight-round draft begins at 6 p.m. MDT with the first two hours being carried live on TSN and TSN3.

Since the current format of the draft – with the elimination of territorial exemptions – began in 1985, the Stamps have selected first overall on five occasions:

1986: DL Kent Warnock (University of Calgary)
1992: OL Bruce Covernton (Weber State)
2003: OL Steve Morley (Saint Mary’s)
2005: DL Miguel Robédé (Laval)
2014: OL Pierre Lavertu (Laval)

The Stampeders acquired the first overall selection when they swapped first-round selections with the Ottawa RedBlacks as part of the deal that transferred the playing rights to quarterback Nick Arbuckle from Calgary to Ottawa. The Stamps also acquired Ottawa’s third-round selection as part of the trade.

In addition, Calgary owns the BC Lions’ fourth-round pick as part of the trade that sent American offensive lineman Justin Renfrow and a fifth-round selection to the Leos.

Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel will be available via video conference call at the conclusion of the draft.

Calgary currently holds nine draft picks.
