As part of the organization’s mandate to support of local amateur football, the Stampeders Foundation has pledged a financial contribution to help revive a Calgary high school program.

A $10,000 donation is being made to cover all uniform costs for the Bowness High School Trojans, enabling them to return to the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association circuit for the 2022 season. Bowness last played independently in 2012 and formed a joint team with the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs for the past eight seasons.

“Bowness High School has a rich history of athletics and maintains a unique place in its community,” said Corey Allison, Bowness’ athletic director and head coach. “The return of the football team will provide a source of pride for staff, students and the community. Getting the Green and Gold back on the gridiron has been a community effort with many people contributing to the endeavor. A massive thank-you goes out to the Stampeders for their donation of $10,000 going directly towards purchasing new uniforms.”

The school will field a Division II senior team next year made up of students in Grades 10-12 with future plans for a junior squad. Daun Daum, the head coach at Bowness from 1979-2003, will be returning as an assistant on Allison’s staff.

Current Stampeders offensive lineman Ryan Sceviour is the only Trojans alumni to ever suit up for the Red and White. Sceviour starred for Bowness from 2010-12 and was a member of the last team to exclusively represent the school.

“I’m very excited to hear that Bowness is getting their football program back,” said Sceviour, who went on to play for the University of Calgary Dinos and was the Stamps’ first-round draft pick in 2018. “Some of my best memories are playing with the guys on that field. It helped shape and mold me into the player I am today.”

In addition, the Stampeders video department has purchased a Hudl account on behalf of the Trojans for film-review purposes and will share an accumulation of past high school game film with the team.

“On behalf of the Stampeders Foundation, we are thrilled to be making this contribution to the return of Bowness Trojans football,” said Stampeders senior manager of business operations Alex Snell. “Community support, specifically through amateur football, has always been a primary objective of the Foundation and we are very pleased that more youth in our city can soon experience all that the game of football has to offer.”

Bowness will first hit the field for spring camp on June 20 before beginning training camp in late August. Sceviour plans to serve as an occasional guest coach for his alma mater.
