Eleven members of the Calgary Stampeders – running back Ka’Deem Carey, receiver Malik Henry, offensive linemen Derek Dennis, Sean McEwen and Ryan Sceviour, defensive linemen Mike Rose and Shawn Lemon, linebacker Cameron Judge, defensive back Jonathan Moxey, kicker René Paredes and punter Cody Grace – have been voted as 2022 Canadian Football League West Division all-stars.
The all-stars were determined by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC), one vote from each West Division team’s coaching staff as well as online fan voting.
It’s a sixth division all-star honour for Paredes, a fourth for Dennis and a third for McEwen. Carey, Rose, Lemon and Grace are all second-time all-stars while Judge, Sceviour and Henry are being honoured for the first time in their careers.
Here’s a closer look at Calgary’s honourees:
Ka’Deem Carey: The Stampeders’ nominee for the Most Outstanding Player award was the CFL rushing champion in 2022 with 1,088 yards. He was tops among running backs with 10 rushing touchdowns and led the league in average rushing yards per game (77.7), 100-yard games (three), carries of at least 10 yards (34) and carries of at least 20 yards (11).
Malik Henry: Despite being limited to 13 games, Henry cracked the 1,000-yard mark in receiving as he made 62 catches for 1,023 yards. He scored eight touchdowns and his average of 78.7 yards per games was the second-highest total in the CFL.
Derek Dennis (tackle), Sean McEwen (centre), Ryan Sceviour (guard): The three offensive linemen were part of a unit that allowed just 17 sacks – 12 fewer than the next-best team in that category – and helped the Stampeders lead the CFL with 135.3 rushing yards per game, 21.8 yards more than runner-up Winnipeg. Sceviour was a starter for all 18 regular-season games at right guard and McEwen served as one of Calgary’s team captains..
Mike Rose: The North Carolina State product repeats as a West all-star after his contributions to a defensive unit that led the CFL in sacks was ranked first in the division and second in the league with just 89.1 rushing yards allowed per game. Rose made 17 starts at defensive tackle and was second on the team with seven sacks. He added 25 tackles including four tackles for loss as well as one special-teams tackle, one forced fumble and one interception.
Shawn Lemon: The West Division finalist for Most Outstanding Defensive Player shared the CFL lead with five forced fumbles in 2022 and he had the league’s second-best total in sacks with 14. Lemon matched his career high in sacks and climbed to 15th place on the CFL’s all-time list with 92 career QB takedowns. The 11-year veteran also had 28 defensive tackles this season including one tackle for loss, two fumble recoveries and four pass knockdowns.
Cameron Judge: In his first season with the Red and White, Judge led the CFL in both fumble recoveries with five and big plays (a combination of interceptions, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, blocked kicks and tackles, sacks or knockdowns leading to a turnover on downs) with 11. Judge was No. 1 on the Stamps with 78 defensive tackles and added three tackles for loss, two special-teams tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. He scored two defensive touchdowns – one on an interception and one on a fumble return.
Jonathan Moxey: Making starts at three different positions – boundary corner, field corner and boundary half – Moxey was a standout in Calgary’s defensive backfield in 2022. He led the CFL with 13 knockdowns and added 26 defensive tackles and two special-teams stops.
René Paredes: The veteran led the CFL with 211 points, 54 field goals and five field goals of at least 50 yards. He was the league scoring champion for the third time in his career and converted at least 90 per cent of his field-goal attempts for a sixth time. Paredes was 47 of 49 on converts and his average of 66.6 yards on regular kickoffs (which excludes onside kicks) is second-best in the league. He had one game this season in which he was perfect on five field-goal tries and four in which he was successful on all four of his attempts.
Cody Grace: The second-year punter from Australia led the CFL both in punting average (48.2 yards) and net punting average (39.6). Grace punted 82 times for 3,951 yards, had a season long of 77 yards and pinned the opposition inside its own 10-yard line on four occasions. He also had one recovery of his own punt that led to a Stampeders touchdown.
